Dish

This maiolica dish was made in Deruta in Italy between 1520 and 1560.

The dish is painted in polychrome with a donkey playing a lute. It is inscribed 'VOLETE VEDERE SI(I)LMO(N)DOEGVASTO LASINO SONA ILIVOTE PORTA ILBASTO', which translates as 'If you want to see how the world is in a state, the donkey plays the lute and carries the pack saddle'.
