Jug (1 of 2)

This maiolica jug was made around 1579 at the Patanazzi Workshop at Urbino in Italy. It came from a service to celebrate the Alfonso II d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, to Margherita Gonzaga in 1579.

The jug has an embossed bow handle and is painted in polychrome with arabesques on a white ground, the motto 'ARDET AETERNUM' [It burns forever] and, below the spout, an impresa. The impresa is supposed to represent a piece of asbestos impossible to extinguish once lit. The underside is inscribed 'Af' and '32'.

The 'Af' monogram indicates that the piece was one of 99 pieces bought by Andrew Fountaine (1808-73) as an addition to the 18th-century collection of maiolica acquired by Sir Andrew Fountaine.
