This maiolica dish was made in 1533 in Italy, perhaps at Gubbio by a follower of Francesco Urbini.

The dish shows 'The Judgment of Solomon' in polychrome and ruby and yellow lustre. Solomon had to judge which of the two women was the real mother of the live baby. He did this by ordering the death of the baby. The real mother renounced her claim to save her child and thereby revealed herself as the natural mother.

Francesco Urbini was working in Gubbio between around 1531 and 1536. He was influenced by one of the most prolific painters of the 1530s, Francesco Xanto Avelli da Rovigo.
