Jug (1 of 2)
Add to album

This maiolica jug was made in 1606 in Rome, possibly at the Diomede Durante Workshop. Diomede Durante, a native of Castel Durante, has been documented in Rome between 1590 and 1624.

The jug is decorated in polychrome with a saint, possibly St Bernard of Lairvaux, in a medallion, and grotesques. It is inscribed '1606'.

St Bernard of Lairvaux is much represented in counter-Reformation painting. As an early Doctor of the Church he may carry a book as an attribute and carry a crook-shaped pastoral staff of a bishop or abbot. However, he is usually shown wearing the white habit of the Cisterian Order.
