This maiolica dish was made in Italy in 1527. It was possibly made at the workshop of Guido Durantino at Urbino and lustred at Gubbio by Maestro Giorgio Andreoli.

The dish is painted in colours with a depiction of 'Vulcan forging arrows for Venus for her son Aeneas' from Virgil's Aeneid. It is inscribed '1527 Mo oG daugubio' [Maestro Giorgio of Gubbio] in ruby lustre.

Aeneas, dressed in armour made for him by Vulcan, at his mother's request vanquished her enemies in Latium and helped to found the city of Rome.
