This plate and these two bowls were found at Threave Castle in Kirkcudbrightshire - from the late 14th to the mid 15th century one of the main residences of the Black Douglases. They are made of wood and date from between the 14th and 15th century.
The plate is made of ash. The piece includes the greater portion of the basal boss into which two motifs - one the heart device of the Douglas family - have been burned. The smaller bowl (centre) is also made of ash and has knife cuts visible around the margin. The larger bowl's inner profile is ornamented with a series of shallow curves leaving raised areas between. There is a deep groove on the outside.
