This glass vase was designed by Tapio Wirkkala in 1980 and made in 1982 by Venini at Murano in Venice in Italy.

The vase is made of clear colourless glass with translucent deep red and opaque grey decoration. It bears the diamond-engraved mark 'venini italia 82'.

Venice has a very ancient glassmaking tradition, resulting in great technical skills amongst the workforce. The art of the glass blower rather that the cutter or engraver, dominates Italian glass, and all new techniques and new designs depend on and exploit this skill. Modern Italian glass is consequently noticeable for its elegant and original shapes, and also for its bold use of bright colours. Venini, Toso Vetri DíArte, Barovier and Toso and Barbini are all inter-related dynasties who have employed outstanding artists and designers in recent decades.
