Bowl

This glass bowl was designed by Tapio Wirkkala in 1978 and made in 1979 by the Iittala Glassworks in Finland.

The bowl is made of of clear colourless moulded glass, with an irregular ribbed exterior surface and three feet. The design is called 'Avanto'.

The Finnish glass industry has employed some of the most distinguished artists of the last three decades. Tapio Wirkkala, born in 1915, trained as a sculptor and joined the Iittala Glassworks in 1947. He also worked as a woodcarver, a silversmith and as industrial designer. A number of imaginative technical innovations were introduced by him, notably carved wooden moulds into which the glass is blown taking on the texture of the wood.
