This clear greyish glass bowl dates from around 1936. It was designed by Edward Hald and made at Orrefors Glass Works in Sweden.

The vase has wheel-engraved decoration depicting fish and bubbles. It is diamond-engraved with the mark 'orrefors HE127'.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Scandinavian, and particularly Swedish glass, developed what had been an insignificant industry into a major international influence through their application of functionalist, modernist theories. The centre of this new creativity was Orrefors Glassworks. Edward Hald, a painter and pupil of Matisse, was taken on by Orrefors in 1917, and had enormous influence throughout this period.
