Aeroplane engine
Add to album

This turbo aero engine, the Nene, was made in 1945 by Rolls-Royce Ltd. It was used in a number of aeroplanes including the Hawker Sea Hawk, which incorporated 'bifurcated' exhaust ducting - split jet pipes with exhaust exiting either side of the aircraft.

The engine has a centrifugal compressor, nine combustion chambers and a single-stage turbine. The Nene could produce 5000 lbs thrust. The large object mounted to the engine is the cartridge starter system with exhaust outlet. The nameplate is marked 'ROLLS-ROYCE LTD DERBY & LONDON ENGLAND NENE AERO ENGINE, ECU 10301, SERIAL NO 370, 627219'.

As with this engine, Rolls Royce generally named their post-war engines after British rivers. In 1946 the British government donated examples of both the Derwent and the Nene jet engines to the Soviets, who reverse engineered them. The Russian version of the Nene, the Klimov RD-45 was capable of 7700 lbs thrust and was the powerplant for the formidable Mikoyan Gureuich Mif-15 fighter.
