This pumpkin lamp is one of a range of inexpensive items sold for Hallowe'en (Halloween) celebrations in turn-of-the-millennium Britain. The practice of using pumpkin lanterns rather than 'traditional' Scottish turnip lanterns reflects American influence.

This orange plastic pumpkin, with black handle, is battery operated. When a switch on the base is turned on, a light flashes.

The 'horror show' paraphernalia associated with Hallowe'en night celebrations in 1990s Britain reflect an Americanised, Hollywood-influenced version of the traditional All Hallows Eve festival - itself a mixture of Christian and popular practices.
