Armoured legging, suneate

Warriors on horseback were very vulnerable to the sweeping sword strokes of their enemies. The shin pad or suneate was tied to the lower leg with silk ties. It extends over the knee to give extra protection.

The shin pad is made of chain mail is ribbed to keep it rigid. It is heavily padded with cotton, to make it easier to wear.
