Net

This net was excavated by antiquarians Reiss and Stuebel during the 1880s at the necropolis at Ancon, on the Peruvian coast. It had been buried in a chamber grave with a mummy bundle. It had probably been used for carrying items, rather than for fishing.

The net, tied into a bundle by the Museum, consists of cord (probably of cotton) in two colours, knotted to form a loose network.

The Ancon necropolis contained hundreds of 'mummy bundles' - people buried crouched, and wrapped in textiles, with a false head attached, and accompanied by possessions, in underground chambers. They span several centuries to around 1500.
