Aeroplane engine & model of Wright aeroplane

This display at the Museum of Flight at East Fortune in East Lothian features a Wright aero-engine and a model of a Wright aeroplane, known as a 'Wright flyer'. The engine dates from 1910 and was fitted to a Wright Model B Airplane. The model dates from 1909. The Museum of Flight display centres around the Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, and their historic flight on 17 December 1903.

The engine has an aluminium crank case, four steel jacketed cylinders and overhead valves. It is fitted with jump spark magneto, plugs, waterpump, fly wheel and two sprockets. The castings were made from the original 1905-6 patterns. The model is built to a scale of one-and-a-half inches to one foot.

The Wright Brothers carried out the first sustained, controlled, powered flight on 17 December 1903 and are recognised as the pioneers of the practical powered flying machine. The original Wright flyer is on display within the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. The model and engine were presented to the Museum by Orville Wright in 1927.
