Dragon mask

This dragon mask would have been worn by the foremost of a one or more dancers hidden under the body costume. The dance was particularly popular at new year processions. The mask was held by the front dancer who worked the movable jaw.

This mask of black laquered wood has traces of gilding with all interior parts in red lacquer. These include rims of the eyes, lips and interiors of the ears and nose. The ears and horn are detachable.
