These iron knives with bone handles were found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. They show the variety of knives used at the fort between 80 and 180 AD.

The forms of the knives and the materials used in their manufacture are little different from modern knives.

A number of knives of various shapes and sizes were found at Newstead, presumably designed for a variety of purposes. The larger knives could have been used for butchery, perhaps as filleting knives. The smallest knife was possibly used to open oysters.
