Sundial gnomon
The sundial gnomon is the part of the sundial which casts its shadow over the dial, with its edge set at the angle of the particular latitude for which it has been constructed. This example was designed around 1744 by William Fullarton of Fullarton House near Troon, in Ayrshire. It was probably made by Robert Craig a local clockmaker.
The entire gnomon is covered with various tables on both sides. This side shows the designer's and the maker's names at the top, with tables for: 'THE TIME OF SUNSETTING DAILLY'; 'PERIODS OF THE SATELL: AND DIST: IN 1/2 DI: OF THE PLAN'; 'NEW MOONS BY THE EPACTS AND GOLDEN NUMBER'; 'MAGNITUD: PERIODS DISTANCES OF THE PLANETS'; and 'THE LATITUDES OF PLACES AND DIFFERENCE OF THEIR MERIDIANS FROM LONDON...'
William Fullarton was making alterations to his country house in 1744 and presumably this is when he ordered the constructing of his sundial from Robert Craig. Fullarton House has now been demolished.
