These eight pattern books are from the Glenruthven Weaving Mills at Auchterarder in Perthshire. They date from the mid 20th century. Such books were kept by companies to show the current ranges of goods available to customers. The books also served as a record of each business's wares and were kept for reference and reuse.

Pattern book of mainly shirtings dated 1933 - 1934 from a collection of yarn stock and pattern books

Marketing played an important part in the success of the textile industry, with particular attention paid to the rapidly changing demands of fashion. Scotland was a major exporter of cotton goods by the 1830s, and its woollen textiles began to find international markets in the mid-19th century.
