Printing blocks
Add to album

This set of four printing blocks for use on textiles was used by David Evans and Co. Ltd of Crayford in Kent. They date from between around 1860 and the 1930s. Each block has a small print design.

All of the blocks are made of laminated wood. The two on the upper right have cast-type metal printing surfaces and are stamped 'MAILLAUT / A. PARIS'. The other are two carved, and one is stamped 'J. BARRETT'. The carved blocks appear to be replacements for the originals.

David Evans and Co. Ltd are silk dyers and printers and still demonstrate hand block printing at the visitor centre at Crayford. They occasionally demonstrate block-making and display a blockmakers' workshop.
