These tools for forming mouldings round the rim of bottles and dishes, were used in the manufacture of flint glass, probably at the Holyrood Flint Glassworks in Edinburgh. They date from around 1850 and are made of brass, with hardwood handles.

The making of bottle glass began in the 17th century and became important in the 18th. To this tradition was added the making of better quality glass, and by the 1860s Edinburgh was recognized as a world leader in the manufacture of engraved table glassware.
