Tureen (detail)
Add to album

This detail shows the mark of the Glasgow potters, J. & M.P. Bell & Company. It is on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware tureen, the design for which was registered in 1853.

There were many variations in Bell's marks. This one consists of the pattern name 'VICTORIA SCROLL' between two fronds. Underneath are the company initials 'J. & M.P.B. & Co.' Incorporated in the mark is the registry mark, 10 March, 1853.

Like many other potteries in the second half of the 19th century, Bell's most popular ware was transfer-printed earthenware, which was durable, decorative and affordable by the masses. Some designs were extremely well produced.
