Fish dish with strainer

This cream-glazed earthenware fish dish with strainer was made by the Glasgow potters, J. & M.P. Bell & Company. It dates from between 1842 and 1880.

The pattern is called 'HOLLY WREATH'. The perforated strainer in the centre is quatrefoil in shape and fits into the rebate in the dish. It has 48 small draining holes and a large finger hole in the centre for lifting it out.

This company, which became one of the biggest and best known potteries in Scotland, was founded by the brothers John and Matthew Perston Bell and was in production by 1842. The Glasgow Pottery, or 'Bells' as it was more commonly known, produced a wide range of wares.
