Teapot (detail)

This detail shows the impressed mark of Murray and Company of the Caledonian Pottery in Rutherglen in Glasgow. It is on the base of a 'Rockingham' or brown-glazed teapot, dating from between 1872 and 1929.

The oval mark reads 'MURRAY & Co/FIRE PROOF/RUTHERGLEN'.

Another company well known for producing 'Rockingham' or brown glazed teapots was Belfield and Company of Prestonpans. Such teapots were known as 'Broon Coos'.
