Samurai, wore two swords, one long and one short. A different pair were worn at court and for ceremonial occasions, tachi, slung from the girdle, edge downwards and a tanto or guardless dirk thrust through the girdle.

a) This blade for a slung sword, tachi, is signed Bishu Inuyama no ju Munefusa, probably a 17th century swordsmith from Owari Province. b) This shortened katana, hasonly Fujishima left, a family name common in Kaga province in the 14th & 15th century.
