Iron rivets and wood (fragments)
Add to album

These fragments of wood and iron rivets are from one of the pagan Scandinavian burials found at Pierowall on Westray in Orkney. They may be from the planks of a boat burial or from a wooden chest or coffin. The burials date from between 850 and 950.

Iron or wood / portion

Iron was used for a range of objects in Viking Age Scotland including tools, utensils, weapons, horse equipment, nails and rivets. Often all that remains of wooden objects are the nails and rivets used in their construction.
