Stalagmite & Skull (fragments)
Add to album

These pieces of stalagmite had formed around pieces of human skulls in Borness Cave in Kirkcudbrightshire. They probably date to the late 1st millennium BC or the 1st millennium AD.

Other stalagmite pieces enclosing animal bones, teeth and charcoal, along with numerous artefacts, were also found in the cave.

These bones have not been radiocarbon dated, nor is their chronological relationship with the artefacts clear, but other burials in caves in Scotland are known from the 1st millennium BC, for example at Covesea and near Oban.
