Barometer (detail)

This is a detail of a barometer made around 1700, probably by Daniel Quare (1649-1724), a London-based scientific instrument maker and one of the most eminent clock- and watchmakers of his day.

The detail shows the register plates. They read 'Night/Morng'/[mercury] Rising/FAIR or Frost/DRY/Serene/VARIABLE/[mercury] Falling/Rain Snow/or Winds/RAINY/Stormy'. Below is the inscription: 'Invented And Made By/DANL QVARE./LONDON'.

In 1695, Quare was granted the first patent in Europe relating to the barometer construction. The design gave improved portability with an enclosed cistern and a construction at the head of the tube to reduce damage during transport.
