Fireplace set

This fireplace set, consisting of a coal shovel, coal tongs and poker, dates from the mid 19th century. It comes from Cairness House at Longmay in Aberdeenshire.

The tongs are made of brass, while the shovel is of sheet metal with a brass handle and the poker of steel, with a brass handle.

The fact that the set was made of brass, rather than the more common steel, would have meant that it would have had to been cleaned regularly, a task undertaken by the domestic servants of the house.
