Decorative ironwork, in shape of monkey & owl

These two pieces of early 20th century decorative wrought ironwork were made by the Edinburgh ironworks firm of Thomas Hadden. They take the form of a monkey and an owl and were possibly gate decorations.

The monkey has roughly carved features, a stumpy tale and no limbs. The owl is painted dark brown and beige and has black eyes.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, Scottish firms such as Haddens underwent a revival due to increasing interest in Scottish styles and workmanship of wrought iron. This tradition had declined earlier in the 19th century due to mass production of cheaper cast iron.
