Lamp

This railway carriage lamp called 'The Perfection' dates from the 19th century. Lamps such as these were personal items carried by rail passengers for use in railway carriages.

Made of steel, the lamp includes a candlestick together with a case for the candle and a compartment for matches. The lamp is designed to be used as a stand-alone device or to be fixed to the carriage window. It is pictured here with its instructions for use.
