Measures (detail)
Add to album

This detail shows the lids of two pewter measures, one for a half pint (left), the other for a pint. The measures were made around 1826, probably in Glasgow. Neither has a maker's mark.

Both measures have a crown and 'Imperial Standard' on the outside of the lid. The half-pint measure also has 'G.R. IV' (for King George IV).

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
