Measures
These pear-shaped pewter measures, one for a half pint (left), the other for a pint, were made around 1826, probably in Glasgow. Neither has a maker's mark.
The half pint has excise marks for Ayr and is marked on the rim '2 Gls'. The pint measure has excise marks for Lanark Town and County, and has the word 'Pint' marked on the rim. On the outside of the lid, both have a crown and 'Imperial Standard'; the half-pint measure also has 'G.R. IV' (for King George IV).
Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
