Measures

These two pewter baluster measures, one for a half pint (left), the other for a gill, were made in the early 19th century by Robert Whyte, a prolific pewterer based in Edinburgh's Cowgate. Whyte became a freeman of the Incorporation of Hammermen of Edinburgh in 1805.

The half pint measure has an 'embryo shell' thumb-piece, the gill measure a ball thumb-piece. Both are inscribed with the maker's name and excise marks for Edinburgh.

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
