Measure & beaker
Add to album

This pewter measure for a 'chopin' (half a Scots pint) and pewter beaker date from the late 18th or early 19th century.

The beaker fits into the upper recess of the measure. The measure has a lid and a simple thumb-piece. The shape of the measure is known as a 'Tappit Hen'.

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
