Communion flagon & communion cup

This communion flagon and communion cup of the Old Dissenters of Merse and Teviotdale in Roxburghshire date from 1795.

The flagon and cup are inscribed 'CONGREGATION OF THE OLD DISSENTERS IN MERSE/AND TEVIOTDALE 1795'.

In Presbyterian churches communion usually took place once or twice a year. Those considered worthy by the elders were invited to sit round a table to share bread and wine, representing the body and blood of Christ.
