Printed page, from La Mode Illustreé

This page is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dated 1874, the page shows various advertisements, including one for 'Eider Down Corsets'.

The corsets are available from 'W. Thomas & Brothers, 128, & 129 Cheapside, London.' They claim to be, 'Unrivalled for comfort, and a complete protection against colds and chills'.

The wearing of corsets and tight-lacing was a subject often written about in the 19th century fashion magazine. It was suggested that such restriction accounted for the poor health of some girls but this was probably more to do with bad diet and little exercise.
