Axehead (side)

This bronze axehead was found at Applegarth in Dumfriesshire. It dates from between 1740 and 1450 BC. This picture shows the axehead from the side.

The flanged axehead has parallel sides extending from a squared butt until near the end, where the sides are sharply splayed to give a broad blade. The side was decorated with perpendicular and oblique ridges.

A large number of bronze axeheads dating to the Bronze Age have been found. Some were clearly everyday objects, used to chop trees and other woodwork. Other were prestige objects, such as this one, and must have been symbols of power.
