Soup plate (detail)
Add to album

This detail shows two marks of the Glasgow potters, J. & M.P. Bell & Company Ltd. One mark is transfer-printed and the other is one of Bell's impressed trademarks. They are on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware soup plate, made for export to South East Asia.

There were many variations in Bell's marks. The transfer-printed mark here consists of a circular belt with a bell in the centre. The bell handle has a star on top. On the belt are the initials 'J. & M.P.B & Co. Ld.' On either side of the bell are the words 'TRADE/MARK'.

Above the belt is the pattern name 'TARLALU BAGUS'. Below is another scroll with the place name 'GLASGOW'. The registered design number, 102258 is at the foot of the transfer-printed mark. The impressed mark to the right hand side is a bell with a capital 'B'. The pattern name also appears in the local S.E. Asian script.
