This shows the inscription on the front of a transfer-printed earthenware mug. It reads 'Peter Swinton/1838'.

Cylindrical white glazed earthenware mug almost covered by a blue transfer-printed Asiatic pheasant type pattern of bird and flowering bush, inscribed "Peter Swinton / 1838"

Peter Burns Swinton (1827-1912) was born in Gifford in East Lothian. He undertook legal training and became factor of Yester Estate in Gifford.
