This ancient Egyptian gold bead or bezel from a finger ring possibly dates from the 3rd Intermediate Period, 25th Dynasty (between 780 and 656 BC). This picture shows the front of the bead or bezel.

The bead or bezel was made of gold foil pressed into a mould with a base-plate soldered on. The front is in the form of a scarab, with the body formed with parallel lines.

Scarabs were an important symbol in ancient Egyptian religion. They are in the shape of dung beetles, often portrayed naturalistically. Scarabs were symbolic of the enduring human soul. As a result, they often appear with spread wings in art associated with the dead.
