Writing box, suzuribako

This writing box or suzuribako has several compartments inside where cards and pens would be kept. It also contains an ink slab and a copper water pot. Both the inside and outside are beautifully decorated.

The inside lid has a landscape design in takamakie, high sprinkled picture. The design is built up in paste and gold foil added to the surface which is covered in layers of clear lacquer. Maple leaves in gold and mother of pearl decorate the interior tray.
