Soup plate (detail)
Add to album

This detail shows the mark of the Glasgow potters, J. & M.P. Bell & Company. It is on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware soup plate, made between 1842 and 1880 and exported to South East Asia.

There were many variations in Bell's marks. This one consists of wild rose heads with a scroll placed on top. The pattern name 'WILD ROSE' is contained with in the scroll and the company initials 'J. & M.B.P. & Co' appear underneath.

Some of Bell's exported plates can still be found in the bazaars and markets of South East Asia.
