Soup plate (detail)

This detail shows the mark of the Glasgow potters, J. and M.P. Bell and Company. It is on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware soup plate made between 1842 and 1880 and exported to South East Asia.

There were many variations in Bell's marks. This one consists of a water lily design with the company initials 'J. & M.P.B. & Co.' below and the pattern name 'VICTORIA REGIA' above.

Some of Bell's exported plates can still be found in the bazaars and markets of South East Asia.
