Soup plate (detail)
Add to album

This detail shows the mark of the Glasgow potters, Robert Cochran & Company. It is on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware soup plate made in the second half of the 19th century and exported to South East Asia.

The mark consists of a seated figure of Britannia with the company name 'R. COCHRAN & Co. GLASGOW' above and the pattern name 'ETRUSCAN SHIELD' below.

This plate is one in an extensive collection of Scottish plates found in the bazaars and markets of Java, Sumatra and Borneo, areas for which they were undoubtedly produced.
