Soup plate (detail)

This detail shows the mark of John Thomson & Sons of Annfield Pottery in Glasgow's Gallowgate. It is on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware soup plate which dates from the second half of the 19th century and was exported to South East Asia.

The mark consists of the pattern name 'DEHLI/STONE CHINA' on a double circle surrounded by flowers. Place on top of this is a scroll inscribed with the company name 'JOHN THOMSON & SONS'.

By the middle of the 19th century, the area of Glasgow and the Clyde basin was undoubtedly the heartland of the Scottish pottery industry, with several large pottery firms. Annfield Pottery operated from about 1826 to 1887.
