This detail shows the mark of John Hay, a Greenock china merchant. It is on the base of a masonic jug which dates from the 19th century.

The mark takes the form of a circular belt inscribed 'JOHN HAY'. The inscription in the centre reads, 'GLASS & CHINA/MERCHANT/ GREENOCK'.
