Add to album

This is a detail of the lid of a pewter measure for one Imperial pint. The measure was made in England in the first half of the 16th century. The lid has four circular maker's touches.

English baluster measure of pewter for one Imperial pint, contracting at the neck and with a lid displaying four small circular stamps, from London, first half of the 16th century

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
