Soup plate (detail)
Add to album

This detail shows the mark of the Glasgow potters, Robert Cochran & Company. It is on the base of an earthenware soup plate dating from the second half of the 19th century. The plate was exported to South East Asia.

The mark consists of the Royal Arms, surrounded by the company name 'ROBERT COCHRAN & Co. GLASGOW'. The text underneath reads 'IMPERIAL IRONSTONE/CHINA'.

Robert Cochran, already the owner of the Verreville Pottery, established the Britannia pottery as a modern works in 1857, primarily to meet the Canadian export trade.
