Bung (detail)
Add to album

This wooden bung with a bronze cap was found at the site of the Roman fort at Camelon in Stirlingshire. It was used between 80 and 165 AD as a stopper to a vessel of some kind. This is a detail of the top.

The top has concentric lines at intervals. There is a ring attached to a central rod, presumably for a chain.

Supplies were imported to the Roman forts in Scotland from a variety of places, both within Britain and abroad. Many goods were transported in bulk in vessels sealed with bungs.
