Brooch

This bronze penannular brooch was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It dates from between 80 and 180 AD. This picture shows the back of the brooch.

The small brooch has knob-shaped terminals which have been decorated with fluting. The pin is wound round the brooch, and bent to give it a considerable curve where it crosses the hoop.

Roman brooches come in a wide range of styles and decoration. Unfortunately, sculpture from the British Isles rarely depicts a person wearing a brooch. As a result, it is still unclear which styles of brooches were favoured by the different types of soldiers.
